The problem is, most of that experience didn't actually exist yet. When spring 2025 arrived and the features weren't ready, Apple made the extremely unusual move of publicly acknowledging a delay, saying it was "going to take us longer than we thought." Bloomberg reported that inside Apple, the head of Siri told staff the delays were ugly and embarrassing — and that he wasn't sure when the features would actually ship. Apple quietly took down the ads. The features didn't make it into iOS 26.4. They didn't make it into iOS 26.5. As of today, two years after the original promise, the smarter Siri that Apple sold you on still doesn't exist. WWDC 2026 is where that bill comes due — and Apple knows it.

Apple, the company that has spent decades building everything in-house and treating vertical integration as almost a religion, signed a multi-year deal to use Google's Gemini AI models as the foundation for the next generation of Apple Foundation Models. The joint statement was careful with its language, as these things always are. "Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology." But a subsequent report from The Information filled in the details, and the deal is significantly more interesting than the headline suggests. Apple isn't just licensing Gemini as a cloud API and routing queries to Google's servers. Apple reportedly has complete access to the Gemini model running in Apple's own data center facilities. That means Apple can distill that model — take the large-scale Gemini architecture and produce smaller, more task-specific versions that can run on-device or in Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure. Internally, the models powering the initial Siri features are being called Apple Foundation Models version 10, built on a 1.2 trillion parameter model. The next generation — the ones Apple is planning to showcase at WWDC — are version 11, and by all accounts they're significantly more capable, approaching Gemini 3 in quality. The deal reportedly costs Apple around one billion dollars a year — which tells you everything about how seriously the company is taking this pivot. And critically, the entire thing runs through Apple's existing privacy infrastructure. There's no Google branding anywhere. From the user's perspective, it's still Siri. That matters for trust, and it matters for privacy optics. But it's worth understanding that under the hood, the intelligence powering that experience is built on Google's foundation.

WHAT'S ACTUALLY COMING IN IOS 27

So what does WWDC actually hold for Siri and Apple Intelligence? Let me walk through what the reporting tells us, because there's a lot here — and some of it is more consequential than it might appear at first glance. The most headline-grabbing element is the standalone Siri app. Apple is testing a dedicated Siri application for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that will function much like ChatGPT or Claude — a persistent chatbot interface with a history of conversations, displayed in either a list or grid view, with pinnable and searchable chats and iMessage-style chat bubbles. That might sound like a feature, but it's actually a fundamental shift in how Apple thinks about Siri. For fifteen years, Siri has been an ambient layer — a voice command interface you invoke and dismiss. A standalone app with conversation history is a completely different product philosophy. It says Siri is now a place you go, not just a shortcut you use. Alongside the app, Siri is reportedly replacing Spotlight as the primary search interface on iPhone. If that lands the way it's described, the default way hundreds of millions of people search their phones will be a conversational AI interface. That's enormous — and it's also a significant technical risk, because Siri has to actually be fast and reliable enough to inherit that role. Rounding out the core changes: Dynamic Island integration with a glowing Siri icon and a "searching" label while queries process, an "Ask Siri" button appearing in third-party app menus, and a "Write with Siri" option surfacing in the system keyboard. The features Apple promised two years ago — on-screen awareness, personal context, cross-app actions — are all expected to finally arrive in the iOS 27 release this September.

We're talking ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, xAI's Grok, and more. Apple has confirmed this ends OpenAI's exclusive arrangement with Siri, which began with iOS 18 back in 2024. Users will navigate to Settings, then Apple Intelligence and Siri, then Extensions, where they can manage which AI services are enabled and download AI apps directly from a new dedicated section of the App Store. Think about what Apple is doing here strategically. On the back end, Gemini powers the foundation of Apple Foundation Models. On the front end, Gemini competes as one of many extensions alongside Claude and ChatGPT. Apple sits in the middle, controlling the interface, the distribution, the user relationship — and likely taking an App Store revenue cut from AI subscriptions sold through that marketplace. It's a classic Apple platform play. They've built an App Store for AI services, and every AI company has to play by Apple's rules to get access to the audience. There's also a legal dimension to this. Elon Musk's xAI filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple in August of 2025, alleging the OpenAI exclusive arrangement was anticompetitive. The Extensions system neatly sidesteps that concern while turning the solution into a revenue opportunity. Apple isn't just solving a problem — they're monetizing it.

Not feature counts, not spec sheets — the visceral experience that Apple products do what they say they do, reliably. The Siri delays didn't just cost Apple time. They cost something more valuable. When Apple's own Siri chief is publicly telling his team that the situation is ugly and embarrassing, when internal engineers are saying some features may need to be rebuilt from scratch, when the ads for a feature have to be quietly pulled because the feature doesn't exist — that's a credibility erosion that takes years to repair, and only gets repaired by shipping something that genuinely delivers. The competitive landscape has not been patient. Google's Gemini has made remarkable progress. Amazon's revamped Alexa has shipped. Samsung has deeply embedded AI across its Android experience. OpenAI's ChatGPT has become a verb. And Apple has been running an AI strategy that, as TechCrunch aptly described it, has resulted in something "subtle, sometimes invisible, occasionally resented" — one that doesn't have the wow factor of the competition. The other dimension of pressure is hardware. The iPhone 17 was sold partly on Apple Intelligence. The forthcoming foldable iPhone is being designed around a software experience that better Siri is central to. Apple can't keep pushing this forward on hardware promises if the software isn't there. Something has to give at WWDC 2026 — and for the first time in a while, it seems like Apple might actually be ready to deliver.

I don't think WWDC 2026 resolves that question — but I do think it's the beginning of an answer. Here's what I'm watching for on June 8th. First, the demos. Apple is a company that has always understood that a great demo can reset a narrative. If the Siri demo on stage actually works — if it shows genuine on-screen awareness, genuine personal context, genuine cross-app intelligence — that moment matters. Second, the framing around the Gemini partnership. Apple is going to have to explain this to consumers in a way that doesn't erode their trust in on-device privacy, because "we're powered by Google" is a complicated message for a company that has spent years marketing privacy as a differentiator. The private cloud compute infrastructure and the white-labeling of Gemini as Apple Foundation Models is how Apple threads that needle — but they'll have to be precise about it. Third, the Extensions system. If Apple executes on a genuine AI marketplace, that's not just a Siri upgrade — that's a new revenue platform and a new category of developer opportunity. That's the kind of announcement that reshapes how the industry thinks about Apple.
